Gustavian chest of drawers, Sweden, 1780-1800.
This elegant chest of drawers is made of yew tree and has a mahogany veneer. Furthermore, it has its original bronze fittings and escutcheons. The three drawer commode stands on four pointed feet. The drawers are slightly curved. The commode is a beautiful example of the Swedish adaption of the French Louis XVI style during the reign of King Gustav III of Sweden. Gustav III, who reigned from 1771-1792, brought French influence to Sweden after his 1771 visit to France. In France, Gustav fell in love with the neoclassic designs popularized during the reign of King Louis XVI.
